The role of the Mayor in London 2012
The Mayor of London plays a central role in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. He works closely with the bodies involved in the staging of the Games, and has particular responsibility for the way London works as a city during the Games and for capturing the legacy and benefits of the Games for London.
The Mayor of London sits at the heart of the London 2012 project. He is a national and international figurehead for the Games. He is part of the formal funding and decision-making structure which underpins preparations for 2012. And he takes lead responsibility for some of the essential parts of the programme.
Specifically, the Mayor of London is:
* co-chair of the Olympic Board, which supervises all the work to prepare for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and to secure the legacy and benefits of the Games for London and the UK.
* a signatory of the Host City Contract, which enshrines the commitments made by London to the International Olympic Committee, and formally accepted the Olympic and Paralympic flags on behalf of London at the close of the Beijing Games in 2008
* a founder member and shareholder both of the London Organising Committee of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (or LOCOG), the private sector company responsible for staging and hosting the 2012 Games, and of the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC), which will manage and maintain the parkland and permanent venues in the Olympic Park, and oversee the development of the Olympic Park after the Games
* one of the funders of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) , the public body responsible for developing and building the new venues and infrastructure for the Games.
* responsible for coordinating the City Operations programme, which is preparing London to host the Games. This work is partly about ensuring smooth, safe and efficient organisation to support the Games and to keep London moving, but is also about matching the outstanding experience that will be offered inside Games venues with an equally outstanding experience across the rest of London.
* responsible for coordinating a wide range of work to capture the legacy and benefits of the Games for London, in fields as wide as sports participation, education, employment & skills and volunteering.
He also chairs the Olympic Park Regeneration Steering Group, which supervises the multi-agency work to secure a regeneration legacy from the Games for the five east London host boroughs.
The London Assembly questions the Mayor about all his Olympic-related responsibilities, as well as monitoring preparations leading up to the 2012 Games and the legacy that will be left for the capital.
London Ambassadors will welcome visitors from all over the world during the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. We’re looking for volunteers to be the face of London; people who are passionate about the capital and want to tell millions of people about the hidden treasures that makes London one of the best capital cities in the world.
Millions of visitors are going to arrive in London for the Games and the atmosphere will be incredible. London Ambassadors will be at the centre of all this excitement.
Being a London Ambassador is also your chance to try something different. Whether it’s volunteering for the first time, using new technology, working within a team or getting to know different people. And the benefit of being an Ambassador won’t stop when the Games stop. You’ll have some great memories and lasting, valuable work experience.
Creating an unforgettable 2012 experience across the whole of London
We aim to make London 2012 a wonderful welcoming experience for all visitors.

The success of the Olympic and Paralympic Games depends on more than just the Games themselves. It will depend on every element of the experience, for Londoners and visitors alike. Only by getting each part right will London be able to show itself to the world in a way that will make us all proud.
The Mayor is leading a range of initiatives to ensure London in 2012 is as welcoming and exciting as it can be. This means coordinating the work of a large number of bodies, including Transport for London, Visit London and London’s local authorities as well as LOCOG and the ODA.
Priorities include:
providing high quality accessible information on how to enjoy and get around London
putting on a fantastic show through our Cultural Olympiad programme of festivals and events
we’ve just launched the Culture Diary to collect information on all cultural events and activities being planned in 2012.

* Welcoming visitors through our Host City Volunteers
* Lighting and dressing the city in a manner befitting the host of the greatest show on earth
* Making London accessible and easy to move around, including through investment in transport and signposting
* Creating as many opportunities as possible for people to experience the Games, even if they don’t have a ticket to an Olympic or Paralympic event.
